The Democrats’ convention theme is always one of “optimism,” while painting the Republicans’ convention as dark and pessimistic. “Optimism” is normally defined as hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something. But, the Obama/Clinton brand of optimism is laden with additional baggage, to wit: hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something while contemporaneously covering up, hiding or utterly disregarding the facts. I suppose it can be labeled “blind optimism.” It’s the type of political campaign optimism that, in the wake of a terrorist attack, says “Move on. Nothing to see here. No need to worry. After all, these random acts of violence aren’t challenging the very existence of our nation. America is no less safe than it was a week ago. We have it under control. Move on.” (more…)

President Obama described the recent police officer ambush in Baton Rouge as an attack upon “the rule of law.” Indeed, it was. Yet, such anarchy is a predictable consequence in a nation whose leaders disrespect “the rule of law” on a regular basis, especially so when that nation is a constitutional republic. (more…)

The first reading of the United States Constitution in the House of Representatives last month caused some to question its relevance in today’s world. How could the supreme law of the land, complete with provisions allowing Americans to change it whenever their proposal is strong enough to persuade representatives in sufficient numbers to do so, possibly amount to anything less than the essence of contemporary relevance? The last two sentences of the Star-Spangled Banner are well known: “O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? Play ball.”

I saw Stan Musial play his last game in Sportsman’s Park and remember paying attention to the words of our national anthem, wondering how anyone could understand freedom without visiting the “land of the unfree,” wherever that was. (more…)

It has now been one month since the hard work of everyday Americans paid off in the mid-term elections and turned this nation back from the precipice of the type of collapse we are witnessing all across Europe. Over the past year, I have seen firsthand how much work and resolve it takes for citizens to run their own country. These folks decided they could make a difference, but it took a commitment from them they were not used to making. They passed the first test with flying colors. We are now facing challenges as a nation that will test our mettle to the maximum. (more…)
